How accurate is it?
Within 4% of the true tempo on 81.9% of 998 test tracks (95% CI 79.4–84.1%). Most misses are octave errors (half or double speed). How we measured it.

How to find the BPM of a song
- 1
Choose a song
Pick an audio file from your device. You can check up to 20 songs a day without an account.
- 2
Let it hear the whole track
StemX analyses the full song, so a slow intro or a breakdown doesn't decide the answer on its own.
- 3
Pick the tempo you count
Compare the result with its half and double time and keep the one you would tap your foot to. Most of the finder's misses come down to this choice.
When the BPM needs a second look
The finder gives one tempo for the whole file. A song that speeds up, slows down or switches to half time in the bridge has no single right answer, so treat the number as the tempo of most of the song.
Live recordings played without a click can drift by a few BPM from verse to chorus. The result is close to the average feel; a DAW's tempo map is the tool for following every bar.
Slow ballads and fast dance tracks are where half and double time matter most, because a 70 BPM song and a 140 BPM song can share the same pulse. Count along with the chorus to decide.
Ambient pieces, spoken word and music in free time may have no steady beat at all. The finder then says it found no steady tempo instead of printing a number.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Upload the song above. StemX listens to the whole track and shows its tempo in beats per minute, usually within a few seconds.
Why does it show half and double time?
The most common tempo mistake is landing on half or double the real speed. Showing both neighbours lets you pick the one that matches how the song feels.
How accurate is it?
Within 4% of the true tempo on 81.9% of 998 test tracks (95% CI 79.4–84.1%).
Is it free?
Yes. You can check up to 20 songs a day without an account. Files can be up to 10 minutes and 120 MB.
Does it also find the key?
Yes. Every result shows the key too, when the model is confident enough to name one.
What can I use the BPM for?
Setting a DAW project to the song's tempo before you add parts, matching tracks in a DJ set, setting a metronome for practice, or building a playlist of songs at one tempo.
Does it work on songs that aren't on Spotify?
Yes. It reads the audio you upload, so demos, unreleased mixes, live recordings and single stems work the same way as released songs.
Can I paste a YouTube or Spotify link?
No. The finder needs the audio file itself, so upload a file from your device. That is also why it works on music that isn't published anywhere.
