Isolate the guitar from any song

Upload a song and StemX splits it into six stems, guitar and piano among them, then opens it with the guitar soloed. Mute it instead to play the part yourself. The first 60 seconds are free with no account.

Hear an exampleNo upload: a song already split into six stems with MIDI.

What guitarists use it for

Learning a part

Hear the riff or the chords without the vocal and the cymbals on top.

Play-along tracks

Mute the guitar and play over the original band, with a click on the song's beats if you want one.

Working out the tone

Listen to the guitar dry of the mix to hear the amp, the effects and the picking.

A MIDI starting point

A full split writes the guitar as MIDI. Expect to clean up chords; single-note lines come out closer.

How to isolate the guitar

  1. 1

    Upload the song

Use an MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC or AIFF file up to 10 minutes long. The preview needs no account.

  2. 2

Hear the guitar on its own

The workspace opens with the guitar soloed for the first 60 seconds. Mute it instead to hear the band without it.

  3. 3

    Split the full song

Sign in to process the whole track. The guitar comes with every other stem and a MIDI file of the part.

  4. 4

    Check the key

Every full split shows the key and BPM, which tells you where to put a capo or which scale to start from.

How clean is the guitar stem?

We haven't published a quality figure for the guitar stem. The public benchmark we use, MUSDB18-HQ, has no separate guitar or piano tracks, so guitar is only scored there as part of "other". Hear the free 60-second preview on your own song before you spend minutes.

What to expect

All guitars share one stem. Two guitars playing different parts, or an acoustic under an electric, come out together.

Heavily distorted guitars and synths or organ in the same range are the hardest cases. Some of the part can land in the piano or other stem, and some keyboard can land in the guitar.

Strummed chords are the hardest thing to transcribe. The MIDI can miss notes or add extra ones, so use it as a draft. StemX does not write tabs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I isolate the guitar from a song?

Upload the song above. StemX splits it into six stems and opens the preview with the guitar soloed; sign in to process the whole song.

Can I remove the guitar for practice?

Yes. Mute the guitar stem in the workspace and play along, or download every stem except the guitar and mix them in your DAW.

Is it free?

The 60-second preview is free with no account. Full songs use minutes from your plan: the Free plan includes 30 minutes a month.

Which files can I upload?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC and AIFF files, up to 10 minutes and 120 MB each.

Does it separate lead and rhythm guitar?

No. Every guitar in the song comes out in one guitar stem.

Does it make guitar tabs?

No. It writes MIDI of the guitar part on full splits, which you can open in a DAW or notation program and edit.
