Make a practice track from any song

Pick the part you play, upload the song, and StemX splits it into six stems with your part muted, so you play over the original band. The first 60 seconds are free with no account.

Who uses it

Players learning a song

Hear the part on its own to learn it, then mute it and play it yourself over the recording.

Singers

Sing over the real backing instead of a re-played cover, with the timed lyrics on screen.

Bands and worship teams

Rehearse with the missing player's part filled by the original, or prepare a setlist alone.

Teachers

Give a student the song without their instrument, and the isolated part to study.

How to make a practice track

  1. 1

    Pick your part

Choose the instrument you play above. You can change it later in the mixer, with mute and solo on every stem.

  2. 2

    Upload the song

Use an MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC or AIFF file up to 10 minutes long. The first 60 seconds play with your part muted, no account needed.

  3. 3

    Split the full song

Sign in to process the whole track. Every full split shows the key and the BPM, and the player can add a click on the song's own beats.

  4. 4

Practise or take it with you

Play along in the browser, or download the stems you want and mix your backing track in any DAW.

What to expect

The web app doesn't slow songs down or change their key yet. It shows the BPM and key so you can set a metronome or capo, and you can slow a stem down in your DAW.

All guitars share one stem, and so do all keyboards that sound like piano. Organs, pads and synths often go to the other stem, so muting piano may leave some keys playing.

A little of your part can stay in the other stems, mostly on loud, distorted or heavily reverbed recordings. Under your own playing it is hard to hear.

Downloads are separate stems, not one finished backing-track file. Load the stems you want into a DAW to export one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a backing track from a song?

Pick your part, then upload the song above. StemX splits it into six stems and opens the preview with your part muted; sign in to process the whole song.

Is it free?

The 60-second preview is free with no account. Full songs use minutes: the Free plan includes 30 minutes a month, Starter is $4.99 for 300, and 100 minutes cost $2.99 once.

Which files can I upload?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC and AIFF files, up to 10 minutes and 120 MB each.

Can I slow the song down?

Not in the web app yet. StemX gives the BPM and a click on the song's beats; to slow a stem down, download it and use your DAW's tempo control.

Does it add a click track?

Yes, on full splits. StemX finds every beat and downbeat, and the player can play a click on them, so it follows recordings that drift.

Can I keep the backing vocals while I sing lead?

Yes. After a full split, split the vocals into lead and backing, then mute only the lead. That split uses minutes, and the button shows how many first.

Is there a page for my instrument?

Yes: the drum remover, bass extractor, guitar extractor and piano extractor pages cover each part in more detail.
