Isolate the piano from any song

Upload a song and StemX splits it into six stems, piano among them, then opens it with the piano soloed. A full split adds a MIDI file of the part. The first 60 seconds are free with no account.

What pianists use it for

Learning a part by ear

Hear the voicings and the left hand without the vocal and the band on top.

Song into piano MIDI

A full split writes the piano part as MIDI to open in a DAW or notation program.

Play-along tracks

Mute the piano and play your own part over the rest of the recording.

Covers and arrangements

Use the isolated part as a reference while you write your own version.

How to isolate the piano

  1. 1

    Upload the song

Use an MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC or AIFF file up to 10 minutes long. The preview needs no account.

  2. 2

Hear the piano on its own

The workspace opens with the piano soloed for the first 60 seconds. Mute it instead to hear the band without it.

  3. 3

    Split the full song

Sign in to process the whole track. The piano comes with every other stem and a MIDI file of the part.

  4. 4

    Edit the MIDI

Drag the MIDI into your DAW or notation program, then fix wrong notes and lengths by ear against the stem.

How clean is the piano stem?

We haven't published a quality figure for the piano stem. The public benchmark we use, MUSDB18-HQ, has no separate guitar or piano tracks, so piano is only scored there as part of "other". Hear the free 60-second preview on your own song before you spend minutes.

What to expect

The piano stem is for acoustic and electric piano. Organs, pads and synths often go to the other stem, and some keyboard sounds can land in the guitar stem.

Piano MIDI is the hardest part to transcribe well. Dense chords and the sustain pedal blur where notes end, so expect missed notes, extra notes and lengths to tidy up.

StemX writes MIDI, not sheet music. A notation program can turn the MIDI into a score, but it will need editing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I isolate the piano from a song?

Upload the song above. StemX splits it into six stems and opens the preview with the piano soloed; sign in to process the whole song.

Can I turn a song into piano MIDI?

Yes. A full split writes a MIDI file of the piano stem, along with every other stem. The 60-second preview has no MIDI.

Is it free?

The 60-second preview is free with no account. Full songs use minutes from your plan: the Free plan includes 30 minutes a month.

Which files can I upload?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AAC and AIFF files, up to 10 minutes and 120 MB each.

Does it work on solo piano recordings?

Yes. With nothing else playing, most of the recording should land in the piano stem, and the MIDI gives you the part to edit.

Does it make sheet music?

No. It writes MIDI, which a notation program such as MuseScore can open as a score for you to edit.
